Which of you is after a passive income stream? Who sees that as the goal?
I definitely used to. It is the “dream” after all. Not trading your time for money. Financial freedom. Whatever you want to call it!
And yet here I am, with a Substack. Which makes me money in a scalable way. Trading my time for money, sort of. But also passive income, sort of.
I hate to break it to you - but I don’t view you (paying) subscribers as income. Instead, I view my paywall as a filter.
My intentionally small paywall is there for one big reason. So that the people I am engaging with through the screen feel like real opportunities. Because the thing significantly more valuable (to me) than money is potential.
Potential for new connections.
Potential for new learning.
Potential for new experiences.
In contrast, a free subscriber might give me something small, at best. A like, or a comment. A bit of resonant recognition via DM if I’m lucky. But usually I don’t get my hopes up.
Now, why am I talking about all of this?
Because in seeing you (my very modest amount of paying subscribers) as opportunities - I all of a sudden have so many opportunities. In fact, TOO many opportunities! I can’t handle having thousands of opportunities. Not even hundreds. Honestly, not even 50 (because who has 50 friends above age 25 😛).
