When the jeans no longer fit
The resistance to sizing up, and the patience required to find the next pair worth buying
I think we’ve all experienced a moment where our jeans that were once a perfect fit all of a sudden become a bit snug. The button requires a bit of effort to do up. After a big meal you just want to rip them off. A particularly apt moment to be sharing this, as we come out of the indulgent holiday season.
In these moments, we could just resign ourselves to an expanding waistline or a changing body shape - but no - we fight the fact that we are growing, or that we are swollen.
We say “ok I’ll stop eating that chocolate”. Or drinking that wine. Or snacking. Or halve my portion sizes. We force ourselves to mold back into the person we once were, rather than embrace where we are in any given moment.
In reality, we could just have a few different jean sizes. One for our post holidays bodies. One for our gym obsessed bodies. One for our post partum bodies.
We can and should have a closet that encourages our bodies to change. To allow for them to not hold onto the exact same shape day in and day out - because we most definitely do not stay the same on the inside. So why should we on the outside?
I’m realizing the same goes for our way of living. I have proverbially outgrown even my stretchiest, most comfortable jeans when it comes to habits, norms & rhythms that make up my days.
